About IFRS 11
IFRS 11 Joint Arrangements is an accounting standard that sets out the principles for accounting for joint arrangements, including joint ventures and joint operations. It was issued by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in May 2011 and became effective on January 1, 2013.
Joint arrangements are common in many industries, particularly in the extractive and construction sectors. They involve two or more parties coming together to carry out an economic activity, with each party sharing control and rights to the assets, liabilities, and expenses of the arrangement.
IFRS 11 establishes two types of joint arrangements: joint operations and joint ventures. Joint operations are arrangements in which the parties have rights to the assets and obligations for the liabilities of the arrangement. Joint ventures are arrangements in which the parties have rights to the net assets of the arrangement.
One of the key features of IFRS 11 is the elimination of the option to account for joint ventures using proportionate consolidation. Instead, joint ventures must be accounted for using the equity method, which means that the investor’s share of the joint venture’s assets, liabilities, income, and expenses are recorded in the investor’s financial statements.
The standard also requires disclosure of information about the nature and extent of the joint arrangements, including the rights and obligations of the parties, the accounting policies adopted for the arrangements, and the financial effects of the arrangements.
IFRS 11 has been praised for providing greater clarity and consistency in accounting for joint arrangements. It has also been criticized for its complexity, particularly in determining whether an arrangement should be classified as a joint operation or a joint venture.
Overall, IFRS 11 has had a significant impact on the accounting practices of companies with joint arrangements. It has led to more consistent and transparent reporting of joint arrangements, which has improved the quality of financial information available to investors and other stakeholders
